I set out of my house with the intention of participating in the Sonntag Gottesdienst (Sunday Mass) and then hitting the Bahnhoff whence the earliest train could carry me away to some place worthy to pique my interest. But even before I could reach the train station, I bumped into a colleague on the bus who put in a word about a castle near Hildesheim which could do well with a visit.
Having fancied life in a castle countless times in the past (probably the influence of the many such books I have read in my early days), and never visited one, I needed no convincing that this had to be my destination. Soon I was at the ticket counter, stuttering in my broken German with someone who spoke not a word of English. Thanks to some customers who helped me out with a few words of English, I sit here writing this blog.
The journey from Hildesheim to Nordstemmen itself was barely over 10 minutes and cost EUR 3,50 with a Bahn 50 card. Even as the train pulled in, I could see the dull silhouette of a castle on a hill far away.
A little bit of snooping around and brief conversations with passers by revealed that I could take a mini train up to the castle. Aand there began my little tour through what I would call a land straight out of a fairy tale.
